About E85

What it is: Mixture of grain alcohol and gasoline, with the target of 85 percent alcohol (E85). The alcohol for ethanol is made from agricultural sources, with corn most prevalent in the United States. Midwest states use E85 extensively, drawing on the regional corn crop. In addition to reducing our dependence on foreign oil, we put American farmers back to work.
Advantages: Can be dispensed at existing gas stations and used in vehicles designed to use E85, with more than 4 million "flexible-fuel vehicles" that can use E85 without alteration already on U.S. roads. Widespread use of E85 could reduce U.S. reliance on oil imports and provide a renewable fuel resource. Because of tax subsidies, E85 is currently about 15 percent cheaper than gasoline, and is expected to drop dramatically lower as the nearly 118 E85 refineries go online across the country.
Environmental impact: Zero emmisions, reduced carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen, and slightly lower ozone-forming chemicals.
Flexible fuel vehicles grow: Flexible fuel vehicle sales began after Congress passed the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988, which offered automakers credits toward the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that all automakers are required to meet. Adding E85 vehicles to an automaker's vehicle lineup helped balance out larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles, so the average fuel economy for the vehicle fleet could be kept within federal standards. Unfortunately, while these vehicles could be powered by E85, customers usually fueled up with gasoline, chiefly because E85 was not readily available, but that's all changing.
Automakers get on board: While General Motors believes that the ultimate solution to reducing the U.S.'s dependence on oil is hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicles, it sees ethanol and hybrids as viable ways to reduce oil consumption right now. "E85 provides us with a tremendous opportunity to save gasoline because ethanol is renewable, domestically produced and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions," said Elizabeth Lowery, GM vice president of environment and energy.
Do you own a E85 vehicle:
Below are the E85 indicating numbers in the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN). These numbers outlined below may indicate that the vehicle was manufactured to use E85 gasoline. Even if you see the VIN indicator below, we strongly recommend that you locate a sticker on your fuel tank door that looks like the the photo to the left. If you do not locate the sticker we recommend that you contact the manufacture to verify that it is E85 compatible. If you are not sure do not use E85!
